The Bird Flute

Underneath a dark green mango tree in the backyard of the Maya House in Coconut Grove in 1974, a propane burner was heating my irons. Pressing up against my lower lip was the freshly burned notch that was splitting the air of the Quena; a South American end blown flute found all around the Andes nations.

The distance from the blow notch to the finger holes which I copied from the Brazilian Major was too long, causing a very airy and undefined sound; so I cut off the tip of a Quena. The one-inch piece of bamboo with a burned notch rested in my hand. Though my plans were to burn another sharp notch in the flute for more precision, I began to dazzle myself with the little piece now stuck on my index finger. Soon bird sounds were splitting out of my mouth as I spit invisible watermelon seeds across the V-shaped burn. My finger popped out of the high-pitched invention making another bird call. I gargled and hummed and tried playing songs by opening and closing the open space in the bottom with my thumb. The Bird Flute was born. It continues to sell after thirty five years, and is heard on my CDs and seen in my video.

1) Plug it with the index finger. Your nail should go in.

2) Press against lower lip and tilt as you blow, spitting out watermelon seeds.

3) Hold the Bird Flute with 2 hands

4)You can get different sounds by:

*Poping the finger out

*Hum while you blow

*Gargle as you blow

*And roll the thum back and forth to get notes
